Another Day in the Life of a Private Investigator

Kinsey Investigations What Does a Detective Do - A person carrying a brief case uses a crosswalk.

What Does a Private Investigator Do? As we’ve mentioned before, there’s no such thing as a typical day in this line of work. California private investigators go with a different flow every day, depending on the “who,” “what,” and “where” of the cases we’re working on. Sometimes, it’s as simple as serving court papers, but as Los Angeles private detectives, we could just as easily be engaged in multi-day stakeouts or a high-stakes missing persons case, where every second counts. The work, the pace, and the hours for L.A. detectives vary so much, because every case is unique, and we’re always trying to be one step ahead.

Kinsey Investigations Day in the Life of a PI - A woman holding a brief case looks down a city street.

Back in 2020, we shared another post about a day in the life of a P.I. a fun guest post, because we got to see one of our top female private investigators through someone else’s eyes. Some of the private investigations on the docket that day included process service, a welfare check, tracking two missing persons in L.A., and working on a cheating spouse case. That’s the other thing about any successful California private investigator – we’re nearly always working on several cases and for several clients simultaneously. Some things can be scheduled, but when a tip comes in that could help us solve an infidelity investigation, provide evidence in a child custody or child support case, or find a missing person in Los Angeles, we’re not about to sit on that information.

If you take a look at our private investigations services page, you’ll find an extensive list of the types of cases we might be engaged in on any given day. Many investigations rely on more than one approach, and we may spend part of our day in the office doing online research before hitting the road to follow up on leads or tips, and speak with people who have information important to our cases. A day in the life of a private investigator might begin with interviewing a client, followed by a welfare check on another client’s relative, questioning someone who thinks they spotted a missing person, then dropping by a home, a school, or a retirement community to obtain photo evidence of someone’s condition or whereabouts or an interaction that takes place. For our veteran female private detectives, all of that might even happen before lunch time!

Kinsey Investigations Corporate Private Investigators

A day in the life of a Los Angeles private investigator also includes corporate investigative work for small business owners or large corporations. Pre-employment background checks, disability or workers comp insurance fraud investigations, and full-on corporate security investigations are several of the jobs California private investigators handle for business clients. Not to mention our “secret shopper” services known as integrity checks within our industry. We can pose as customers for most any kind of business and report back to owners or management teams about their employees’ performance on the job. Smart California business owners realize that hiring a private investigator to identify safety, performance, and security issues can save them everything from revenue to their professional reputation. Working as a corporate private investigator in addition to work for individual clients is the way a lot of Los Angeles County investigators significantly expand the private investigations services they offer.
